WHERE’S ALDO?
Once again, children of all ages are invited to search for the Aldo Leopold images at participating Les Cheneaux area businesses. Once you find the Aldo, you will receive a token. When you collect a complete set of tokens, (??) you may redeem them at the Hessel School House and collect your prize. The “Where’s Aldo?” search will run all week, Monday May 27 through Saturday June 1. Rules governing and businesses cooperating can be picked up at the Hessel School House or the Applecore General Store located at 708 W. M-134, Cedarville.
Thursday May 30
Drummond Island: The Gem of the Huron
Time: 8:20 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Location: Drummond Island Ferry Dock

Cost: $15 - Includes a sack lunch, plus ferry cost if coming from mainland
Limit: 26 participants
Explore Drummond Island with two summer residents who love the island. Based on the interests of the attendees, we can visit the Nature Conservancy's Maxton Plain Alvar Preserve, stop at several North Huron Birding Trail locations, and explore other ecological settings such as Helen's Lake, an “old growth” white cedar stand, and a pitcher-plant bog. We'll look for birds and interesting plants along the way. You will drive between locations. Hiking to Helen's Lake will be leisurely, and no more than 2 miles round trip. Some areas may be wet with uneven terrain. Schedule: 8:40 a.m.- Drummond Island Ferry from DeTour Village If coming from the mainland, plan to be at the ferry about 8:20 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. be in line (first come, first served). Ferry leaves promptly at 8:40 a.m. Fee is $14 per car and driver plus $2 for each additional passenger (discounts for seniors over 65). CASH ONLY! Approximately 35 minutes from Hessel to DeTour Village. If meeting on Drummond Island, be at the Ferry Dock at 9am to meet the rest of the group.
Hiking the John Arthur Woollam Preserve

Not wanting to get out at the crack of dawn? An alternative is to hike the John Arthur Woollam Preserve, with trails leading to the beautiful Narnia forest. Join your friends on this leisurely hike along the north shore of Lake Huron.
Exploring Search Bay
Time: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Limit: Come one, come all. Join the 906 Friends of the Trail Club and spend time exploring the Search Bay area.
Hard to say what we will see but you will see some spectacular views of Lake Huron and explore trails you never knew existed.
The Fascinating World of Bumblebees
Time: 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Presenter: Ms. Sheridan Haack
Location: Hessel School House
After a long career in aquatic biology and chemistry Sheridan Haack retired and became a bumble bee aficionado! You can too! Sheridan will describe how to differentiate bumble bees from similar insects, including other bees. She'll talk about how important bumble bees are to the environment, and to agriculture, and she'll describe the different kinds of common and rare bumble bees you can find in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. You'll learn how you can improve habitat for bumble bees and other pollinators, and how young and old alike can add to scientific knowledge about bumble bees through the citizen-science Bumble Bee Watch program.

Birding by Ear

Get an early start to the Leopold Festival. This trip will start at the Hessel School House at 5 a.m. and proceed to the Birge Preserve. Your guide Michael Carlson will help you identify birds by the dawn-breaking song they sing. From there you will explore other additional birding opportunities.
Birding in the Straits of Mackinac
Time: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: Hessel School House
Group Leader: Elliot Nelson
Cost: $25 Does not include lunch or transportation.
Take a day to explore the wonderful Straits of Mackinac and the bird migration fly way. The trip is birding-focused but will include visiting natural and cultural features along the Straits area. We will look for late migrating waterfowl, shorebirds and songbirds around Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. We will start by visiting the famous Mackinac Bridge View Park and Point Le Barbe where we will soak up magnificent views of the bridge, explore Great Lakes coastal marsh, and bird along cedar lined shores. The next stop is the Mackinac Straits raptor watch and check in with the waterfowl and hawk counters there to learn about their exciting program. As the day progresses we will visit a few other exciting birding locations along the straits area shoreline to check for breeding warbler species.
Exploring the Leopold Preserve

Join Anne and friends as she takes you on a guided tour of the Leopold Preserve.
This tour is for experienced hikers only and you should be prepared with footwear that will keep your feet dry in several inches of water. This includes a boat ride from the Hessel Marina to the Leopold Preserve.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING
Exploring the World of Fantastic Ferns. - SOLD OUT. Wait list available.

The limestone habitats of the eastern U.P. harbor a rich diversity of ferns including several rare and unusual species. Some ferns have changed little over 200 million years and saw the dinosaurs come and go. Individual fern plants can be the oldest living organism in a forest, older than the trees that tower above them. This trip will explore several special locations along the Niagara Escarpment with cliffs, boulders, and crevasses where ferns such as Hart’s Tongue, Walking Fern, Polypody, Green Spleenwort, and many others grow. Hiking will be over uneven rocky ground so sturdy footwear and walking sticks are recommended.

Would you like to learn the easy way to identify wildflowers? Join Naturalists Sarah and Wil Reding as they explore with you the key components of identification. Emmy Award-winning journalist Dan Noyes and former Les Cheneaux Club President Charles Fels, describe the life of young Aldo Leopold and his family here in Les Cheneaux. This will include stories of how two prominent L.es Cheneaux Club members influenced Aldo’s life beyond Les Cheneaux

Boat Trips to the Leopold Preserve

Round trip tickets to the Leopold Preserve on Marquette Island can be purchased online or at the Hessel School House for $10. Boat trips are available all day Saturday June 1 starting at 9 a.m. leaving the Hessel Marina and then on the hour. The boat will leave the Leopold Preserve on the half hour. The last boat leaving Marquette Island will be at 4:30 p.m.

This trip will explore the Wastewater Lagoons as well as a few nearby protected bays and marshes, which are hot spots for amazing breeding bird species. Clark Township's DPW manager and crew were recognized for their work to effectively manage the lagoons that attracts such a variety of birds. We will also look for breeding waterfowl, shorebirds and warblers and marsh birds at a few other local places.

Time: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Location: Hessel School House

Tour the grasslands of the Pickford area for rare upland species. The hay fields and marshes of this region are some of the highest quality in the state, and attract many unique species. Targets include: LeConte’s Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Sedge Wren, Upland Sandpipers, and Sharp-tailed Grouse. Efforts will also be made to visit the Munuscong Wildlife management area for Mourning Warbler and Golden-winged Warbler. Other possible sightings include American Bittern, Wilson Snipe and Bobolinks.

One of the most picturesque preserves in the area is the John Arthur Woollam Preserve, which leads to a shoreline path called the Narnia Trail. This is also a great place to see newly arrived warblers that have just crossed Lake Huron.

From Hessel Beach we will paddle west along the shoreline – checking out the Mill Pond, many of the small points, and enjoying the view from the water. Pending weather and group ability, we will make our way toward Mismer Bay and the Birge Nature Preserve – a marshy ecosystem loved by various waterfowl and migrating birds. We will then either retrace our route or paddle directly across Hessel Bay back to the beach where we started.

Carnivorous Plants (2 trips available)

The Les Cheneaux area is home to several fascinating plants which “eat” insects and small aquatic life. Pitcher Plants, Sundews, Bladderworts, and Butterworts all have different strategies for capturing and digesting their prey. You will visit a lakeside swale and a bog habitat and learn to recognize these special plants and their adaptations for this “savage” lifestyle. Boots recommended for easy walking in wet areas.
The Citizen Science Program
Time: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Presenter: Jen Melinger – Kalamazoo Nature Center
Learn the basics of the Citizen Science Program and the variety of ways you can get involved in community-driven research in Michigan. Statewide initiatives include the Michigan Butterfly Network (a butterfly monitoring program), Michigan Vernal Pool Patrol, Michigan Invasive Species Information Network, and several Michigan Department of Natural Resources programs. There are also numerous ways to get involved in this type of valuable research from the comfort of your own home. We will also explore some of the hundreds of online-based projects available to aspiring citizen scientists of all ages!
“Green Bird” Birdhouse Painting Workshop

For bird lovers of all ages! Paint a free weatherproof paper "green bird house", that you can take home. Event open to all ages and great for young children. A Children's Hike Through the Derby Preserve
Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Group Leader: Little Traverse Conservancy Staff
Limit: 15 (For children ages 7 through 12)
Join Little Traverse Conservancy staff for a fun and educational hike at the gorgeous William B. Derby Nature Preserve located a short distance from Hessel. With more than a mile along Lake Huron, this preserve is the most popular in the Les Cheneaux region. The land is dominated by cedar trees, lush moss and has numerous very large boulders on the property. It is a magical place for a hike! Let’s explore and learn about who calls this place home.
Invasive Plants Threatening Our Area
Time: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Presenters: Nick Castle, Three Shores CISMA. Bob Smith, Les Cheneaux Watershed Council. .
We are being threatened by both water and land plants that are crowding out our natural ones. This session will help you identify non-native land and water plants, with wonderful presentations from local invasive species experts. Tips will also be shared on identification, removal and how you can get involved. A display and Q&A session will also take place after two brief talks.

Some wild animals are very reluctant to eat from a food source that suddenly appears in their domain. “Free food” is often associated with danger. This presentation will show an amazing array photos taken by a motion camera that was placed over a deer carcass late last fall. Join me as we explore which animals took advantage of this "free food.”

Ms. Medlin is a retired biology instructor from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. She is the author of “Michigan Lichens” a field guide paperback book on all the lichens you will find in Michigan.
Sunset Paddle

This trip will paddle east along scenic Hessel Point toward the first and second cuts into Mackinac Bay and Lone Susan Island. We will explore this quiet bay as time allows and then return to Hessel around Club Point and St. Ledger Island to enjoy paddling into the sunset. We will arrive back at Hessel Beach at dusk.
The Wet World of Dragonflies
Time: 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Dragonflies are amazing insects that come with many myths. We’ll explore the world of this interesting group of insects. With all the freshwater habitats in Michigan, dragonflies are a major feature of the state. Come learn about their underwater exploits as immatures and aerial acrobatics as adults, so we can appreciate the wonders of their world.

Beloved local naturalist, Pat Wilson will guide walkers through easy terrain to see some of the delightful plant species of our area. Naturalists extraordinaire the Reddings will lead a second trip. Each will guide you through local preserves to show you what is in bloom and where. Given the unique geology of the area, many rare and protected species may be found here. Children of all ages are welcome. Bring your magnifying lens to get the best close-up looks at these incredible plants.

While not part of the Aldo Leopold Festival you are welcome to participate in the Sunday Farmers Market held each Sunday here at the Hessel School House.

Explore Drummond Island with two summer residents who love the island. Based on the interests of the attendees, we can visit the Nature Conservancy's Maxton Plain Alvar Preserve, stop at several North Huron Birding Trail locations, and explore other ecological settings such as Helen's Lake, an “old growth” white cedar stand, and a pitcher-plant bog. We'll look for birds and interesting plants along the way. You will drive between locations. Hiking to Helen's Lake will be leisurely, and no more than 2 miles round trip. Some areas may be wet with uneven terrain. Schedule: 8:40 a.m.- Drummond Island Ferry from DeTour Village If coming from the mainland, plan to be at the ferry about 8:20 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. be in line (first come, first served). Ferry leaves promptly at 8:40 a.m. Fee is $14 per car and driver plus $2 for each additional passenger (discounts for seniors over 65). CASH ONLY! Approximately 35 minutes from Hessel to DeTour Village. If meeting on Drummond Island, be at the Ferry Dock at 9am to meet the rest of the group.
Hiking the John Arthur Woollam Preserve

The Fascinating World of Bumblebees

After a long career in aquatic biology and chemistry Sheridan Haack retired and became a bumble bee aficionado! You can too! Sheridan will describe how to differentiate bumble bees from similar insects, including other bees. She'll talk about how important bumble bees are to the environment, and to agriculture, and she'll describe the different kinds of common and rare bumble bees you can find in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. You'll learn how you can improve habitat for bumble bees and other pollinators, and how young and old alike can add to scientific knowledge about bumble bees through the citizen-science Bumble Bee Watch program.

Get an early start to the Leopold Festival. This trip will start at the Hessel School House at 5 a.m. and proceed to the Birge Preserve. Your guide Michael Carlson will help you identify birds by the dawn-breaking song they sing. From there you will explore other additional birding opportunities.
Birding in the Straits of Mackinac
Time: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Take a day to explore the wonderful Straits of Mackinac and the bird migration fly way. The trip is birding-focused but will include visiting natural and cultural features along the Straits area. We will look for late migrating waterfowl, shorebirds and songbirds around Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. We will start by visiting the famous Mackinac Bridge View Park and Point Le Barbe where we will soak up magnificent views of the bridge, explore Great Lakes coastal marsh, and bird along cedar lined shores. The next stop is the Mackinac Straits raptor watch and check in with the waterfowl and hawk counters there to learn about their exciting program. As the day progresses we will visit a few other exciting birding locations along the straits area shoreline to check for breeding warbler species.
Exploring the Leopold Preserve

The limestone habitats of the eastern U.P. harbor a rich diversity of ferns including several rare and unusual species. Some ferns have changed little over 200 million years and saw the dinosaurs come and go. Individual fern plants can be the oldest living organism in a forest, older than the trees that tower above them. This trip will explore several special locations along the Niagara Escarpment with cliffs, boulders, and crevasses where ferns such as Hart’s Tongue, Walking Fern, Polypody, Green Spleenwort, and many others grow. Hiking will be over uneven rocky ground so sturdy footwear and walking sticks are recommended.

Boat Trips to the Leopold Preserve

Round trip tickets to the Leopold Preserve on Marquette Island can be purchased online or at the Hessel School House for $10. Boat trips are available all day Saturday June 1 starting at 9 a.m. leaving the Hessel Marina and then on the hour. The boat will leave the Leopold Preserve on the half hour. The last boat leaving Marquette Island will be at 4:30 p.m.

Clark Township's DPW manager and crew were recognized for their work to effectively manage the lagoons that attracts such a variety of birds. Targets include: LeConte’s Sparrow, Clay-colored Sparrow, Sedge Wren, Upland Sandpipers, and Sharp-tailed Grouse. Efforts will also be made to visit the Munuscong Wildlife management area for Mourning Warbler and Golden-winged Warbler. Other possible sightings include American Bittern, Wilson Snipe and Bobolinks.

From Hessel Beach we will paddle west along the shoreline – checking out the Mill Pond, many of the small points, and enjoying the view from the water. Pending weather and group ability, we will make our way toward Mismer Bay and the Birge Nature Preserve – a marshy ecosystem loved by various waterfowl and migrating birds. We will then either retrace our route or paddle directly across Hessel Bay back to the beach where we started.

Carnivorous Plants (2 trips available)

The Les Cheneaux area is home to several fascinating plants which “eat” insects and small aquatic life. Pitcher Plants, Sundews, Bladderworts, and Butterworts all have different strategies for capturing and digesting their prey. You will visit a lakeside swale and a bog habitat and learn to recognize these special plants and their adaptations for this “savage” lifestyle. Boots recommended for easy walking in wet areas.
The Citizen Science Program

Learn the basics of the Citizen Science Program and the variety of ways you can get involved in community-driven research in Michigan. Statewide initiatives include the Michigan Butterfly Network (a butterfly monitoring program), Michigan Vernal Pool Patrol, Michigan Invasive Species Information Network, and several Michigan Department of Natural Resources programs. There are also numerous ways to get involved in this type of valuable research from the comfort of your own home. We will also explore some of the hundreds of online-based projects available to aspiring citizen scientists of all ages!
“Green Bird” Birdhouse Painting Workshop

A Children's Hike Through the Derby Preserve

Join Little Traverse Conservancy staff for a fun and educational hike at the gorgeous William B. Derby Nature Preserve located a short distance from Hessel. With more than a mile along Lake Huron, this preserve is the most popular in the Les Cheneaux region. The land is dominated by cedar trees, lush moss and has numerous very large boulders on the property. It is a magical place for a hike! Let’s explore and learn about who calls this place home.
Invasive Plants Threatening Our Area

We are being threatened by both water and land plants that are crowding out our natural ones. This session will help you identify non-native land and water plants, with wonderful presentations from local invasive species experts. Tips will also be shared on identification, removal and how you can get involved. A display and Q&A session will also take place after two brief talks.

Some wild animals are very reluctant to eat from a food source that suddenly appears in their domain. “Free food” is often associated with danger. This presentation will show an amazing array photos taken by a motion camera that was placed over a deer carcass late last fall. Join me as we explore which animals took advantage of this "free food.”

This trip will paddle east along scenic Hessel Point toward the first and second cuts into Mackinac Bay and Lone Susan Island. We will explore this quiet bay as time allows and then return to Hessel around Club Point and St. Ledger Island to enjoy paddling into the sunset. We will arrive back at Hessel Beach at dusk.
The Wet World of Dragonflies

Dragonflies are amazing insects that come with many myths. We’ll explore the world of this interesting group of insects. With all the freshwater habitats in Michigan, dragonflies are a major feature of the state. Beloved local naturalist, Pat Wilson will guide walkers through easy terrain to see some of the delightful plant species of our area. Naturalists extraordinaire the Reddings will lead a second trip. Each will guide you through local preserves to show you what is in bloom and where. Given the unique geology of the area, many rare and protected species may be found here. Children of all ages are welcome. Bring your magnifying lens to get the best close-up looks at these incredible plants.
