PROJECT: ICE
The Great Lakes were formed by ice, filled by ice, and often covered by ice.  The movie "Project: Ice" views North America’s fresh water inland ocean through the prism of ice, from the crossroads of history, science and climate change.  It tells the story of the geology, human movement, population growth, industrialization, cultural development, recreation, and the profound impact people have had on the very environment they cherish and depend upon.

The Aldo Leopold Festival Committee is very fortunate to be able to offer this multi-national award winning movie as part of our 2017 Aldo Leopold Festival.   For everyone who enjoys the Great Lakes, this is a must see.

MAKING WAVES: Battle for the Great Lakes
The introduction of invasive species into the Great Lakes started with the opening of the Welland Canal in 1932.   The first invasive species to enter the Great Lakes were smelt and lamprey eels.   Since then, a number of invasive species have found their way in through either the canal or via ballast tanks that had been filled in ocean ports around the world and then discharged into the Great Lakes.   The ecological and financial cost to control these species runs into the millions every year; costs borne by municipalities, states and the federal government.   This movie discusses those invasive species and what attempts are being made to control them.   It is a “must see” for everyone who lives on or loves the Great Lakes.
